Role: Principal Financial Planning Accountant
Contract Length: Initially expected to be around 3 months
Location: Hybrid/London - 2 days per week in the office
IR35: Inside
Pay Rate to Intermediary: £700 - £800 per day
Spinwell is recruiting for a Principal Financial Planning Accountant for an excellent opportunity within the public sector.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRINCIPAL FINANCIAL PLANNING ACCOUNTANT
Financial Planning / Budget Setting (Primary Focus)
- Lead the annual budget-setting process, working towards a balanced budget by November
- Liaise with departments to gather, challenge and consolidate budget bids
- Prepare and present financial reports for director scrutiny and board meetings
- Support the production of the final budget submission
- Oversee completion of budget loading into financial systems
Principal Finance Business Partnering (As Required)
- Provide leadership and oversight to Senior Finance Business Partners
- Ensure robust forecasting, monitoring and challenge across directorates
- Coordinate and quality assure monthly financial monitoring reports
- Offer senior-level advice and support to stakeholders across the organisation
Typical Day
The role varies depending on the financial cycle:
- Supporting teams with forecasting, monitoring and reporting
- Engaging with senior stakeholders across departments
- Reviewing financial data, providing challenge and context
- Preparing or presenting reports for senior leadership or boards
- Leading or contributing to budget planning activity (seasonal peak around budget-setting periods)
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE OF THE PRINCIPAL FINANCIAL PLANNING ACCOUNTANT
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management
- Ability to work with a wide range of internal stakeholders and present to board-level audiences
- Strong financial planning and management accounting expertise
- Proven experience of budget-setting, monitoring and forecasting processes
- Leadership and senior-level judgement
- Confidence leading teams, providing challenge and oversight, and operating at a principal level
Additional Skills & Requirements
- Qualified accountant (CCAB or equivalent) – strongly preferred
- Public sector experience is essential, ideally within local government
- Strong numeracy and analytical skills
- Ability to quickly adapt and operate effectively in an interim capacity
- Comfortable working flexibly across related senior finance disciplines
